One of these is a partnership with DOC to eradicate rats and other such pests from Pickersgill Island.
A DOC Community Fund grant of $20,000 is being given to the Mana Cruising Club Friends of Pickersgill Island group for trapping work on Matapara/Pickersgill Island. It will enable the purchase of 55 self-resetting A24 rat traps and supplies for maintaining the traps. The crew from the Porirua-based club will boat to the island in Queen Charlotte Sound twice a year to service the traps.
DOC Sounds Operations Manager Dave Hayes says DOC welcomes the club members' support to make Pickersgill Island rat-free.
First Report on Trapping Trip to the Island
Mana Cruising Club friends of Pickersgill Island
The first trip to Pickersgill was booked for early April but that was scuppered by Covid 19. After regrouping another date was set for 12th to the 15th of June. So after sorting out how many of the 10 or 12 original volunteers could make the commitment for that date 6 Mana Cruising Club members one Doc ranger and 2 ring ins were organised and committed in the face of a Dodgy looking forecast of #0kts Northerly turning to 30Kts Southerly very quickly. Hoping that was enough to get across I confirmed the trip on the Wednesday with a bit of last minute information. Thursday night didn’t blow as hard as I thought it might however there was still a lot of white water on the bar at 8am in the morning?
Pickersgill trapping round 2:
After completing a great trip in June the second and final trip for 2020 is scheduled for 9th to 13th of October (about 6 weeks). This trip will renew lures and gas to the 165 existing traps and extend the network by another 55 traps which will make 220 on the Island. We intend to convert 200 traps to Chirp traps and set out and recover tracking cards so it will be busy. Chirp traps record the date and time of every activation, this will help us to confirm how long the lure lasts and which traps are operating effectively.
Below is some information about “Mana Cruising Club Friends of Pickersgill Island” which covers Cruising Club and longer term objectives of the trapping effort.
In June 2021 the MCC Friends of Pickersgill returned to Pickersgill Island in Queen Charlotte sound for rat eradication work, Yoan from Good Nature came along and made a video of the trip. Worst weather but still good fun.
